At the 10/18/16 Newton Illinois city council meeting the city council voted
themselves and the Mayor a 20% pay increase.
Salary for the part time positions will increase from $5,000 to $6,000 per year for
alderman,$10,000 to $12,000 for Mayor, effective 5/1/17.
The council found the large increase necessary to offset the ever increasing costs
of living in Newton that is caused by the borrow all you can, tax all you can, spend
all you can agenda that the city council has adopted.
Good politicians can always find a way to exempt themselves from the
consequences of their own policies.
This is the same city council that reduced the City Clerks salary from $36,000 to
$8,000 in 2012 or so and have now increased it to $16,000 effective 5/1/17, 44%
of the former city clerk's salary.
This was obviously done to discourage anyone from running for the position. What
they really wanted to do was make the city clerks position appointed but the pesky
state statutes got in their way.
City employees will get the normal 2% - 3% increases.
